It was 1670 when a handful of brave pioneers settled a land hugged by the Atlantic and nestled between two rivers that land we now call Charleston. The deep water port and the rich fertile soil were ideal to host a diverse cultural blend of English, French, Caribbean, German, Dutch and Swiss seeking freedom and fortune. A growing labor pool of captive Africans over 60% of the population of Charleston carved out vast crops of cotton, indigo and rice. Great wealth established Charleston as the seat of Southern culture and politics until it all abruptly ended with the Civil War. The city lost its luster and its labor. Charlestonians looked back at the glory days, but not so much forward, and the city fell into decline. “Too poor to paint and too proud to whitewash” described this southern jewel that wasn’t polished for several generations. When the dust was brushed away, 1100 buildings built before 1900, cobblestone streets, and authentic Plantation Gardens, all survive as a reminder of a grand era.
