Kiawah Resort Ocean Course
I wonder if Pete Dye knew in 1991 that this would be the course that people would put on the top of their bucket list to experience. Thanks to his wife suggesting to raise the greens above the dunes, every hole provides a view of the unforgettable Carolina coastline. You will experience more seaside holes than any other course on the Northern Hemisphere, but that also brings the challenge of wind. Whether easterly or westerly, the Atlantic sea breezes will test your game. Since its debut, the PGA has chosen this king of courses to host numerous tournaments, and you will feel like royalty when the most knowledgeable, game-enhancing caddies—the “best in the business”—assist you in accomplishing this incredibly challenging course.
Wild Dunes Harbor Course
Don’t be deceived by this small course – at only 6,359 yards, it leads the way on big challenge in South Carolina golf courses! Tom Fazio let the lagoons, salt marshes and the intracoastal waterway inspire his younger course on Wild Dunes, and it is a challenge for every skill level. Rating at 71 and boasting the “Marsh Monster” on hole 17, hazards define every hole with this big par 70 field that will test your skills on the narrow drive ways. Located on the beautiful Isle of Palms Wild Dunes Resort, Golf Digest pronounced these greens as one of the best in the state.
Golf Digest chose Charleston National as the best non-resort course in Charleston, and with the competition in the area, that says a lot for this Rees Jones designed course. Featuring over 7,100 yards of scenic variety from forested areas to lagoons, the unique intracoastal waterway and acres of marshlands on the finishing holes makes this a memorable place to play. This year-round public course is located in Mt. Pleasant. This course is ideal to either simply enjoy the challenge and beauty of a classic South Carolina environment or impress future clients with your in-the-know gem of a golf find.
*Carts after noon, golf carts are path only, fore caddy required
The views of Charleston and Fort Sumter, and the accessibility of being only five minutes from downtown make this a great choice for the best round of golf deal in Charleston. Since 1979 this has been the locals’ favorite choice, perennially voted “best par 3 in the low country” and a winner of South Carolina course of the year. Patriots Point will give you some challenge with harbor side winds and long tees ranging from 5100 to 7000 yards. All levels can enjoy the Willard Byrd’s links style Mt. Pleasant course.
This course provides the South Carolina golf experience without lightening your wallet like the resort courses will. Ron Garl had the opportunity to design a course around historical landmarks, century old Oaks all on the hallowed ground of an American Revolutionary battlefield. It’s only 30 minutes from the Charleston downtown scene to the home of an old plantation property that runs along the Stono River. This course provides tricky water hazards and natural grass areas. The professional staff and unique historical landscape will get you bragging on this not-to-be-missed course.
